Public Health Artifacts

My Health Science/Public Health artifact reflections demonstrate my knowledge of key health topics, ability to apply scientific concepts, and readiness to address public health challenges. The artifacts focus on my research skills, data analysis, and understanding of health systems.

This artifact is a paper I wrote for a Global Health course at Clemson University. The goal of this paper was to learn more about the 17 Sustainable Development Goals created by the United Nation. Within this I chose to explore women’s health in Afghanistan in relation to Sustainable Development Goal 3. This goal specifically focuses on good health and well-being.  This paper widened my perspective on how certain cultures hold prejudices and limitations to women’s rights and health. I learned how the women in Afghanistan are treated and the struggles they endure. I came up with ideas on how Afghanistan could make progress in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3 for women. Researching this topic and coming up with recommendations strengthened my critical thinking skills. As well as, I found it important to become more knowledgeable on another country’s status for women’s health. I believe continuing to learn more about all cultures is key to staying well versed and strengthening cultural competency skills. Although I may or may not ever have a patient from Afghanistan, it is important that I absorb knowledge on as many cultures and places as possible.

This artifact is a 13 page Literature Review I wrote for a course at Clemson University called Determinants of Health Behavior. I wrote this paper on the effects of not applying sunscreen and its complications. I researched intrapersonal and interpersonal factors, the Transtheoretical Model, the Health Belief Model, and more. I also included suggestions for interventions. Writing this Literature Review gave me practice on drawing meaningful conclusions from multiple sources and challenged me to heavily review data. I also enjoyed getting to research something I found interesting and can impact everyday life. I think it is important to remember that the healthcare field is always evolving, becoming more educated, and growing. This Literature Review will remind me, when I have a career in healthcare, the importance of continuing to learn and conduct research. Just because something is done one way doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvement or a new way it can be done more efficiently which further exemplifies the importance of research and having an open mind.
